Today is Sister Corda’s heavenly birthday. If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you’ve heard about Sister Corda! She was an amazing woman in so many ways! At 90 years old she was my oldest “Paper Pumpkin Player”, still made her delicious homemade candy to give to others, volunteered each week at the homeless shelter, helped out in my Pre-K classroom, walked daily, and was completely devoted to her faith. She taught for many years and made a difference in so many lives! If you couldn’t remember something, you’d ask Sister Corda…she had a mind like a steel trap! She was truly a blessing and had such an impact on me and my family!
I had the pleasure of introducing Sister Corda to card making. I still remember the excitement and joy on her face when she made her first card. She continued to have just as much joy with each and every card she made. She donated many of her cards to the nuns at the convent so they could share them with others. She followed my blog daily (and would have something to say if I missed a day or two). Often she would be waiting in my classroom in the morning with a list of items she needed or to show me something she created. I keep her photo in my craft room so we can still create together. She continues to influence my life and makes me strive to be the best person I can be.
Sister Corda loved Paper Pumpkin and enjoyed getting together each month to put our kits together. Her great niece, Liz Hott, reached out and wanted to donate a Paper Pumpkin kit in her aunt’s memory. What wonderful memories you must have of this sweet lady. Mostly I send cards to those that are hurting in some way or another and I’ve recently been told that they are doing a lot of good. It isn’t something that many people in this area are doing but I must say it has been a wonderful way to keep in touch with many, many people during this time of “the virus”. I think the mail has become much more important because it is a tangible way to let folks know that you care about them.
I belong to a card group that sends Random Act of Kindness cards to people I do not know. They are nominated by others in the group. The cards are sent for anything from get well, sympathy, thinking of you or birthday. I am hopeful this helps them to feel “the love” from mankind.
I started personalizing the cards I sent to family and friends. Not only for birthdays and anniversaries but just general good wishes etc. I really started to do this during the virus for my own therapy. I have received messages, phone calls and even thank-you notes saying how much they appreciated this. Some commented how it really helped brighten their day. Even the men in my life appreciated these cards. It really showed me how important receiving cards in the mail are still important to people and I hope to always continue to do so.
I contact all the folks that were in my osteo exercise classes on a regular basis just to check up on them since we can’t meet. It’s been especially important to me as 3 have cancer issues they are dealing with, one had a husband having brain surgery,, and another was under quarantine (but no Covid), thankfully. I started a walking group to help keep them active. It’s ranged from 2-10. Now it’s cold (43 this morning) and we’ve had snow I’ll be moving to starting a Zoom class. At 84 it helps keep me active and involved too!
A beautiful story! To be like Sister Corda, WOW! She was a blessing to everyone, that is beautiful and we are here to also be a blessing. I love reaching out to people that I have not heard from in a while, just a random Hello via text but what I love the most is sending homemade cards. Since
Covid 19 I have been sending cards to health care professionals to thank them for their service. It is a double gift one for me and one for them. They appreciate the gesture and I love making them feel special.
As soon as I saw the photo of Sister Corda I knew this was going to be a good blog post about thoughtfulness etc. I love that photo you shared. I feel as if I knew her from the stories you have shared.
Some days I feel like I am single handedly keeping the post office afloat! Hundreds of cards for birthdays, thinking of you, just to say hi etc. I like to make treat holders and surprise people with them. For Halloween I was just really worn out and had trouble creating a good card. I found some little boxes in the closet and decided to decorate them for the people at my local Arby’s. I go a lot to get ice tea (they have the best brewed tea) sort of off hours. Several of them have shared stories about their kids, sick pets, and stuff. So I took them out with tiny little brownie bites I found at Wal-Mart with colorful sprinkles on them. I dropped them off and quickly left on Halloween as they were busy. Then I just have been sort of not feeling well so didn’t go out for a few weeks. Well, I webcast week and they all came to tell me they loved the little treats. They argued who would get the box with the cats on it, the gnomes etc. They were all overjoyed and gave me my tea free. The manager even thanked me saying they had a huge rush after I had stopped in and my little treats just made their day. Silly I know but I sure made fifteen people smile.
I have life-long friend who is incapacitated. She had a stroke over 25 years ago and is limited. She can’t speak, use a phone or computer. She can’t drive. My hubby and I take her food shopping monthly. He drives us and I accompany her in the store. Recently she used a motorized cart. Not only did it save her some energy but it put a giant smile on her face. She shook her fist in the air and said I did it! It hit me that that was a big deal to her. It was as if I took her to our local amusement park called Kennywood. Her reaction warmed my heart ♥.
What a wonderful tribute to our deeply missed, heavenly sent, forever friend!! Miss you and our gang so much…. may your holidays bring you so much joy, love and memories as you give everyone else!!
Happy Heavenly Birthday to Sister Corda!
Every year, I make Christmas cards for Shareacard, and leave them out at work for others to sign. Last year I made and sent 500. This year, I’m still making cards for Shareacard (albeit, not as many as last year!), and also for kids in foster care, residents of the veteran’s home, along with Christmas cards for names on my monthly list I keep with #BecauseKindness. Your friend sounds like she was a heckuva gal!
I am amazed at how much everyone is doing during this difficult time! As soon as I saw the picture this morning, I remembered seeing Sister Corda in your group making the Paper Pumpkin kits! I always thought how sweet it was that she was a part of your group! I can only hope when I am 90 that I will be able to continue making cards and treats! During this quarantine time, I have been marking lots of cards! Most of them are going to sweet little ladies that are in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living facilities. I recently lost a Retired Teacher that I taught with that had some health issues. She was always thrilled to receive one of my handmade cards! I think we can all be assured that a handmade card always brightens someone’s day!😊
I was a product of Catholic schools from 1st grade through college and have many wonderful memories of the kindnesses of many of my teachers, hence the reason I became a teacher. Sister Corda sounds like a wonderful person whose legacy of kindness will live on. Now retired and having been a card maker for 6 years, I started a card ministry at my church as well as the local shelter for battered women. During this pandemic, I’ve made over 250 cards for our Minister of Congregational Care to send out to encourage, give support and sympathy to those who’ve been impacted by Covid. When I look at my supplies, it looks like I’ve hardly made a dent so card making will go on! 🙂

Such a great person and all the wonderful memories you have! Little acts of kindness along with a hand made greeting card sometimes mean so much to someone, and so very easy to do. During these times that little greeting card can lift a very heavy load!
