Star of Light Candle Box

I enjoy the glow of burning candles! (And I absolutely love the smell when you blow them out!) Candles are a symbol of hospitality and I think they make a great hostess gift. Today’s project is a beautiful box to gift some candles.

The box holds 4  10″ dinner candles.

I CASEd this idea from the amazing Sam Hammond (Pootles.com).  She is so talented and an absolute joy to listen to (Love her British accent!). You can watch her video below.

We don’t have “standard” size candles in the US so I had to adjust the dimensions to fit my 10″ candles.

I started with a piece of 12 x 12 cardstock and cut 2 7/8 from one side so it measures 12 x 9 1/8. With the long (12 inch) side across the top, score at 7/8 and 11 1/8.  Score along the short side at 7/8, 4 1/8, 5, 8 1/4.

I followed Sam’s directions for cutting and assembling the box. *You need to use a strong adhesive (Fast Fuse, Tear & Tape, or Multipurpose Liquid Glue) on the 6 notched pieces.

I adjusted the layers on the top of my boxes to fit my measurements. The top layers measure 9 3/4 x 2 3/4 and 9 1/2 x 2 1/2. The Star of Light Stamp set is perfect for this box.  I love to heat emboss and it was fun to try out the different color combinations. I used silver embossing powder on navy and purple, gold on green, and white on red. These boxes are so quick & easy to make which worked out great for me because I need several hostess gifts! Here’s a look at each of the different color combinations I made.

This Whisper White box has silver foil and Perfect Plum layers on top with silver embossing. This box holds 3 purple and 1 pink candle for a coworker who bought a new advent wreath and needed some candles.  (Purple candles are not always easy to find so I stock up when I find them.)

Next is my red and white box with white embossed layers. I put red and white candles wrapped in white organza ribbon inside. I have good news…Stampin’ Up! brought back the white organza ribbon!  I love this ribbon as it is so easy to sponge in different colors. (Click HERE to see one of my first blog posts showcasing this technique.) The ribbon will be available in the new Occasions Catalog Jan. 3rd. Yea!!!

I love the green and very vanilla with gold embossing on this box. (The photo does not do it justice!) There are vanilla candles inside.

Navy and white are classic and so elegant with the silver embossing and Silver Metallic-Edge Ribbon.

I really like these boxes and would be thrilled to receive any one of them as a gift! Which candle box is your favorite?

Here’s a fun fact…Did you know the practice of placing lighted candles in the windows at Christmas was brought to America by the Irish?  The historical background of this custom is quite interesting.

Tuesday Tip…Embossing Buddy

Last week I shared how to make a gusseted bag with the gold Striped Treat Bags.  If you missed it you can click HERE. I heat embossed the tag in gold to coordinate.  Gusseted bag made using the Striped Treat Bags, Merry Little Labels with Everyday Label Punch , and the Holly Embossing Folder by Stampin Up. For tutorials and supplies visit www.juststampin.com

I love to heat emboss! Watching the magic happen puts a smile on my face every time. I’ve had a few people ask about heat embossing so I though I would share a couple of quick tips and a cool new heat embossing project kit, Hello Friend.

The Embossing Buddy (103083) is the perfect tool to use when heat embossing. The antistatic pouch helps keep stray Embossing Powder from sticking to your project. Rub it directly on the surface to be embossed and the powder will stick only where it’s wanted.

Here’s another TIP: Rub it on your fingers first!! When we touch cardstock, the oils on our skin get left behind. That residue is exactly what the embossing powder will stick to!! Rubbing the Embossing Buddy over your fingers first absorbs the oil and prevents this from happening.

Heat embossing is so much fun and it really is quick & easy.  You can step up your cardmaking by trying the different embossing techniques with the Hello Friend Heat Embossing Project Kit. Check out this video to see what you get in the kit as well as the cool projects you can make using 3 different heat embossing techniques.

This would be a great project to get together and do with your friends and earn the Merry Patterns Stamp Set for FREE. (See details below.) You can purchase the kit and other products from my online store.

Surprise Guest Stamper

Today’s post is a little different than normal. I surprised my mom by writing the blog for her today. I wanted her to have a day off. This is the card I made for her birthday yesterday.

IMG_4141

This card was very quick and easy to assemble, but don’t tell my mom that. I started with a traditional size card base in Smoky Slate. As I am not as gifted as my mom in color selection I used the Stampin’ Up color guide to help me pick a color.

IMG_4129

Once I saw the two options, it was an obvious choice. I decided on the top color option which is Smoky Slate paired with Daffodil Delight and Whisper White. My mom loves the color yellow so Daffodil Delight it was.

Next came the job of deciding on the layers. Eventually, I settled on an embossed Whisper White with a floral design because a card in Daffodil Delight just needs flowers. The Whisper White cardstock was 5 X 3 3/4. I adhered this to the base with the TOMBO liquid glue because I appreciate the time it gives you to wiggle the layer till it is straight.

I knew before I even walked in my mom’s craft room that I wanted to heat emboss. So using the Birthday Blooms stamp set, VersaMark ink, and silver embossing powder, I heat embossed her saying on a leftover piece of Whisper White paper.

IMG_4132

I used oval framelits to cut out the saying and the curvy oval framelit to cut out a border in Daffodil Delight.

Now it was time for some embellishment! I used a scrap piece Daffodil Delight DSP (what an alliteration) cut to 4 1/4 X 3/4 layered on top of the embossed Whisper White and Smoky Slate base. The DSP strip was also adhered using the TOMBO liquid glue.

Finally, it was time for some finishing touches. I punched out some flowers which I tried my best to curl up for some 3D pop. Then I just had to add some rhinestones for the center of the flowers. Not only did it add a little sparkle but it helped to tie in the heat embossed silver saying.

I left the inside blank in order to have space to write a note to my mom.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Ariane Stark
