Tuesday Tip…Dies

If you are familiar with the Big Shot, you know that there are different types of dies…framelits, edgelits, and thinlits. Some die sets contain a mix of dies that cut only, dies that emboss only, and detailed dies that require extra accessories for best results.  With the new annual catalog, Stampin’ Up! decided to create a system that will help you more easily navigate how to build your sandwiches for different types of dies in the Big Shot.

There is a color-coded key on page 215 in the Annual Catalog that details the sandwich techniques needed for each die type. You can click HERE to view (and print) how die images are color coded to indicate which type of sandwich to use.  Refer to pages 215-221 in the Annual Catalog to see which sandwich you need to use for the dies you own.  *I highlight the dies I own in the catalog.  This makes it quick & easy to reference when I am placing an order or need to check how to build my sandwich.

Hope you find this new feature helpful. Here’s my Top 10 favorite NEW Dies..

All of these dies (except the Delicate Lace Edgelits) have coordinating stamp sets and can be purchased as a bundle for a 10% Savings! Click on any of the images above to view in my online store.

Product shares are being mailed out this week!  If you ordered from the “buffet” be sure to check your mailbox for your taste of the new products.  I will be placing another order later this month for round 2 of my product shares.  Click HERE for more information about my Product Share Buffet. Tuesday Tip for Photopolymer Stamps

I had the most wonderful weekend in Hartford, Connecticut with my stamping friends. I was so excited to get to meet Nancy Farrell. Nancy has been following my blog right from the beginning and always brings a smile to my face with her comments.  This was her first Stampin Up! event and she fit right in laughing and joking with the rest of us!  She also shared a cool tip that she does which prevents her photopolymer stamps from staining.  When she gets a new photopolymer stamp set, she removes the plastic on top and adheres the back plastic piece (with the stamps attached) to the inside of the stamp case.  Then she inks up the stamp set with VersaMark and lets it dry.  When she wants to stamp using ink, it cleans up without leaving a stain!  Brilliant!  Thanks Nancy!

I would love for others to join our team!  We have so much fun at these Stampin’ Up! events and online chats! It doesn’t matter if you are local or long distance as we are connected through cyber space. Everyone shares ideas and helps one another out.  Most of the team are hobby demos and it is a great “sisterhood”.  I told you how we rented a house (it was actually a mansion with 7 bedrooms) so we could spend more time together and stamp, cook, chat, swap cards, etc.  I named us “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Stamps”. *I’ll be sharing our swap cards and more this week! Here’s a few photos from the weekend.

G is for Glimmer Paper

Welcome to my ABC “Sale-A-Bration” Series! This series features products from the 2018 Occasions catalog and Sale-A-Bration brochures. Today I’m showcasing the Myths & Magic Glimmer Paper (and more). This is a no-mess way to add glitter accents! This paper is embedded with small pieces of glitter. Glitter won’t brush off or flake off so there’s no clean up. You get 24 6×6 glittered sheets: 8 each of 3 colors (Iridescent, light green, turquoise)

This paper is so much fun to add accents for a little touch of sparkle to any project.  I punched balloons to go with the Party Pandas for this fun fold birthday card inspired by a card Linda Heller shared that was designed by Janet Munden.

I love these adorable pandas! They remind me of Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Bei Bei. I live in Maryland just an hour outside Washington D.C. where you can visit the giant pandas at the National Zoo.   My Pre-K students and I even watch these giant pandas right in our classroom through Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s Panda Cams. Click on the link below if you want to see what Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Bei Bei are up to today. (Be forewarned this could get addictive!)

Earlier today I snapped these photos as I watched them eat their lunch. (Now you know how I really spend my day.  LOL)

Here’s what it looks like from the side. You can see how it gets it’s Double Z-Fold name.

Stampin Up Party Pandas Double Z Fun Fold birthday card idea with Glimmer Paper and Bubbles & Fizz DSP - Jeanie Stark StampinUp

This is a fun card to make.  It is a little wider than others I have shared so here’s the measurements:

Lemon Lime Twist: 4 1/4 x 11, scored at 5 1/2 and 8 1/4.

Basic Black: 3 1/4 x 10, scored at 2 3/4 and 5 1/2.

Whisper White: 3 x 4 1/4 for top piece, (2) 1 x 2 1/2 for bottom pieces.

Bubbles & Fizz DSP: 1 x 4 1/4 for top piece, (2) 1 x 2 1/2 for bottom pieces.

You can click HERE to see another Double Z-Fold card I shared with a photo tutorial how to assemble.

Did you notice the colors of my balloons? Are you wondering where I got the Calypso Coral Glimmer Paper? Here’s a cool tip…You can make any color glimmer paper you want with the Iridescent Glimmer Paper, reinkers, and an Aqua Painter.  Just add a few drops of reinker in the lid of your ink pad and use the Aqua Painter to color the Iridescent Glimmer Paper. (*You never want to pick up ink directly from your pad using the Aqua Painter or Blender Pens.) You want to make sure to go in one direction so you don’t ruin the bristles on your Aqua Painter.  Let it dry before cutting or punching.  Now you can add a little glimmer to any project!

Here’s another look at today’s card and matching envelope.

Blender Pen Refill Recipe

Yesterday I shared a card I colored with ink and a blender pen.  You can see that post HERE.  I appreciate and read every comment and love getting tips and inspiration from you.  I had a few questions about blender pens so I thought I would share a little information along with a storage tip and special refill “recipe”. Thank you Chris R. for the inspiration for this post.

blender-pens

Blender Pens  Item # 102845  $10

Blender pens combine the flexibility of watercolors with the convenience of markers.  It’s easy to achieve a beautiful watercolor effect using blender pens with watercolor pencils, ink, or markers.  The tip cleans off with just a stroke or two on scratch paper, so you don’t need a different pen for each color. Blender pens (and markers) should be stored in a horizontal position to allow the liquid to continually saturate both ends.  These dual-tipped pens are filled with a specialized solution to blend ink easily.  A card club member, Colleen, shared with me awhile back that you can refill the blender pens so I did a little research and found the “recipe”.  It’s just 3 ingredients and I found all of them at CVS Pharmacy.

4 tsp. Distilled Water

2 tsp. Glycerin

¼ tsp. Rubbing Alcohol

*Note: You MUST use distilled water.  Tap water has minerals, chlorine and other impurities in it.  These will cause your pen to smell and/or get moldy.

Mix all ingredients together. Gently pull the tips out of the blender pen (both ends).  You can easily pull the tips out with your fingers (or tweezers).  Be careful not to ruin the tips. *Put the caps back on both ends of the marker so you don’t dry out the barrel inside. Soak the tips in the fluid for a few hours (or overnight if they are very dry).  Gently push the tips back into the marker. I store my refill solution in a recycled embellishment case.

img_9763

img_9764

To watercolor you simply pick up ink from the lid of your ink pad and color the image. You can also color the image with watercolor pencils or markers then blend with the pen.

img_9761

I decided to make my card today a little different than yesterday. I layered the image on Blushing Bride then adhered it to a Sahara Sand card base.  I also added a bow using Very Vanilla Satin Ribbon from the Occasions Catalog (item # 142794).

How To Make A Triple Bow

Yesterday I shared a card I made with a triple bow. Several people asked about how I made the bow so I thought I would attempt to share the details.  First of all, I have a little wooden bow maker that a husband of one the ladies in card club made for everyone.  Here’s a picture of mine.

img_9504

This little gadget makes bow making a breeze!  You just spread out the pegs for larger bows or bring them closer for thin ribbon and/or tiny bows.  It’s quick and easy!  I did a little research and found one similar from Amazon but it was expensive and from reading the reviews it seems the pegs didn’t stay in the holes. Fortunately, two of my blog followers, Sonny and Nancy, shared information from a fellow demonstrator, Debbie Henderson, who sells them. (Thank you ladies for sharing! I love how we help each other!!) Here is the link:

https://debbiesdesignsblog.blogspot.com/p/daves-stamping-tools-for-sale.html

To make the triple bow on yesterday’s card, I just wrapped the ribbon around the pegs three times.  Cross the ribbon over in front (like an X) and take the top ribbon and bring it under and over through the center of the pegs.  Then wrap it under the ribbon in front and tie it in a knot. My photos aren’t great but hopefully you get the idea.

Then you just slide it up and off the pegs and cut the ends. The back is facing you so when you turn it around you have a perfect bow. (*I have a pair of scissors that I use just for cutting ribbon.  Believe me, it is worth the investment to get a good pair of ribbon scissors!)

I use glue dots to attach the bows to my projects.  Here’s a close up of yesterdays card with the bow. You can click HERE to see the full post.

img_9464

Here’s some bows I made using the organza ribbon. What do you think I’m doing with all these bows?

Tuesday Tips for The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

wonderul-year

I love the holidays and I love stamping! I want time to enjoy both during this busy time of year and I bet you do too!  Well, I have some tips for you and one tip doesn’t have anything to do with stamping; however, it will give you more free time to stamp! Isn’t that what we all crave…a little more time to create?

Tip # 1…Make It! I think of the time I spend in my craft room as saving me from going to the store to buy cards and gifts.  I love to give sets of cards as gifts and enjoy making my own boxes, bags, and tags for favors and other gifts I give. This is a WIN WIN!!  I get to relax and enjoy creating while making gifts to give. You can do this!!! Use the products you have on hand to make some cards to gift to others…save time and money! If you need to purchase anything, you can shop my online store without leaving the comfort of your home and it will be delivered right to your door! I love getting homemade gifts as I know it is a gift from the heart. I have shared many gift giving ideas on my blog as well as gift packaging for treats, teacher gifts, etc. Contact me if you need ideas or help! Consider giving a Paper Pumpkin subscription or a gift certificate. I will make you a homemade card to present your gift certificate or subscription!

One of the things I love to do is decorate our home for the holidays…from setting up my New England Village (for a touch of home) to adding greenery, lights, and trees in nearly every room. (I stopped at 5 trees this year…so far! LOL)  This brings me to my next tip…

Tip #2…Wrap it!  I had this brainstorm last year as I was getting ready to take down all the decorations I set up…why not just put away the trees all decorated. Hmmmm…it was worth a try! So we bought some Press’n Seal and started wrapping.  Last year we wrapped 2 of our 6.5’trees as well as our slim tree and stored them. (Our slim tree fit perfectly in the guest room closet.) We just had to take the big tree apart as there was no way it would fit through any doorway. I couldn’t wait to get the trees out this year to see if it worked…and it did!!!  All the ornaments, ribbons, etc. were secure. What a time saver!!! I plugged the trees in, did a little fluffing and I was done! More time to stamp!!  When I told my friend Susan what I did she said the man who invented Seal & Wrap is married to a card maker. How cool is that?!! I wonder if he knows this new unintended use for his invention? Here’s some photos for you. 🙂

Just unwrap and plug it in!

The kitchen basket tree is always a favorite as each basket is filled with candy.

img_7002

The White House tree pictured below is my favorite (along with the family tree that has all the little homemade ornaments my kids made over the years).

I just love everything about this time of year…making homemade cards and gifts, decorating our home, listening to Christmas music, baking for my cookie exchange, enjoying the lights at night, getting together with family and friends, helping others, and (most important) remembering the reason for the season. I make it a goal every year to do what I can WITHOUT stressing out. You can’t do it all! No one can! Realizing this takes the pressure off! Work together and focus on what’s most important.

My Pre-K students really keep the spirit and meaning of Christmas alive! Every year they perform a play, The Christmas Story. It is just the sweetest thing you can imagine…4 year olds dressed up as Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds, animals, and kings singing their little hearts out as they act out the story on stage for family and friends. Our class “adopts” a family in need and everyone donates money and food.  I love shopping for the family (and making a few crafty things of course)… it is such a great feeling to work together to help others. I love working with the next generation of card makers… I help my students make Christmas cards for residents in local nursing homes. Even 4 year olds can make a difference in this world!  Don’t underestimate this craft we do…a simple card can make a huge difference to someone this holiday season or anytime!

I hope today’s tips and ideas have inspired you or helped you in some way. What’s your favorite thing to do this time of year?  I would love to hear from you!

Have a wonderful day and enjoy this most wonderful time of the year!

S is for Stamps

Welcome to my ABC’s of Stampin’ series. I bet it was no surprise today that S is for Stamps! Stampin’ Up! offers 3 types of stamps…clear, wood mount, and photopolymer. You can learn about each type in this short video.

Here are some basic tips I’ve learned along the way to keep in mind when using stamps.

  1.  When inking your stamps use a light, repeating tapping motion. Make sure to move the stamp over the ink pad to ensure that the entire surface of the stamp gets covered.  Don’t use too much pressure or rub the stamp on the pad. Over-inking can lead to blotchy designs. Using too much pressure can result in ink on the block which could transfer to the cardstock.
  2. Take a look at the block before stamping on card stock.  Wipe off any ink on the block using a tissue.
  3. When stamping with photopolymer stamps, use extra cushion under the cardstock to make sure the stamp makes even contact on the surface.  You can use a piece of foam or the Stampin’ Pierce Mat. This will also help the ink to transfer to the card stock evenly.
  4. You need to hold photopolymer stamps in position for an extra moment or two to allow the ink time to transfer properly to the card stock. You don’t need to apply extra pressure to the stamp, just give the ink extra time to absorb onto the card stock.

Check out this short video on using the photopolymer stamps.

*Note-Stampin’ Up’s! Photopolymer stamps have been available for several years now and come in clear mount cases just like the clear mount and wood mount stamp sets. (There are many retired photopolymer stamps sets on sale now in the Clearance Rack.)

Q is for a Quick Tip

Welcome to my ABC’s of Stampin’ series.  Today I have a Quick tip for you. Do you sometimes have trouble getting your clear mount stamps to stick to the acrylic block?  I found that sometimes the label on my stamp would lose it’s “sticking power” over time. (I hate it when a stamp falls off the block!) I was in a quandary!  I quit putting the labels on my stamps; however, I like having the labels on my stamps. So, here is a simple and quick fix using  Multipurpose Liquid Glue (I love this stuff!!) Simply apply a thin layer of liquid glue to the top of the label. (I used the Broad Tip on the bottom of the glue to spread my thin layer.) Let it dry and it will leave a sticky layer that will stick to your acrylic block! Quick & Easy! No more stamps falling off the block!

FYI…Today is the last day for the September Special Offers from Stampin’ Up! That means this is your LAST CHANCE to grab the Layering Ovals Framelits at 25% off. There should be no qualms about it…you’re going to want these!

I’ve had a few questions about how these are different from the older set of Oval dies from Stampin’ Up! Take a close look at the photo above and you’ll see – this set has scallop ovals in all sizes!!! The older set only had one large scallop oval and the rest were plain so your layering options were limited. There are a lot more sizes too..a quantity of 15 Dies!

This set of framelits is a game changer. It makes it so easy to make quick & fabulous cards! Here is a card I shared recently using the layering oval framelits.  You can click on the card for all the details.
