Shine A Light On Peace for the Pals Blog Hop

December All that Sparkles and Shines post graphic

Welcome to the Pals monthly blog hop. We’re so glad you’re here! December is time for glitz and bling with  “All that Sparkles & Shines”. Today we feature projects that sparkle or shine. Maybe even a little of both.

You may be starting the hop here or coming from a previous Pal’s blog. Either way, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll find the full line-up below to help you move, or “hop” along from Pal to Pal.

I live in Maryland not far from the Antietam National Battlefield. One of our family traditions is to visit the battlefield the first weekend in December for their Annual Memorial Illumination. It is the largest memorial illumination in all of North America and this year marked their 30th anniversary. Each luminary (over 23,000) represents a soldier’s sacrifice during the bloodiest one-day battle of the Civil War. (I’m a bit of a history buff.) There are no words adequate to describe the event…to see these hallowed grounds lit up is unbelievably surreal!

I was inspired by my recent visit to create this set of luminaries.

These are simple to make. For each one I cut a 5 x 8 1/4 piece of Garden Green cardstock and scored each at 2, 4, 6, and 8. I used the new Rectangle Stitched Framelits Dies (available Jan. 3rd in the Occasions Catalog) to cut the shape out for my light to shine through. I was so excited when I saw these dies in the new catalog! You get 13 different sizes which feature stitching inside and outside the frame! How cool is that?!

I cut my vellum at 1 7/8 x 3 1/2 and adhered it to the back with glue dots. I cut the letters from the Dashing Along Designer Series Paper using the Large Letter Framelits and adhered these to the vellum. I used Tear & Tape along the 1/4 edge to secure together.

A battery operated tealight fits inside for a nice glow. I added some Gold Metallic-Edge Ribbon to tie it together for that “sparkle and shine”.

You can make these to give as a gift or decorate your mantle or bookcase. These make the perfect night lite for a child’s bedroom (you could spell out the child’s name) or any room (use any die).

Here’s a few more photos of the Illumination.

I am thankful for our men and women in the Armed Forces throughout the world.  My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives, so the world may someday enjoy world peace.
