Blender Pen Refill Recipe

Yesterday I shared a card I colored with ink and a blender pen.  You can see that post HERE.  I appreciate and read every comment and love getting tips and inspiration from you.  I had a few questions about blender pens so I thought I would share a little information along with a storage tip and special refill “recipe”. Thank you Chris R. for the inspiration for this post.

Blender Pens  Item # 102845  $10

Blender pens combine the flexibility of watercolors with the convenience of markers.  It’s easy to achieve a beautiful watercolor effect using blender pens with watercolor pencils, ink, or markers.  The tip cleans off with just a stroke or two on scratch paper, so you don’t need a different pen for each color. Blender pens (and markers) should be stored in a horizontal position to allow the liquid to continually saturate both ends.  These dual-tipped pens are filled with a specialized solution to blend ink easily.  A card club member, Colleen, shared with me awhile back that you can refill the blender pens so I did a little research and found the “recipe”.  It’s just 3 ingredients and I found all of them at CVS Pharmacy.

4 tsp. Distilled Water

2 tsp. Glycerin

¼ tsp. Rubbing Alcohol

*Note: You MUST use distilled water.  Tap water has minerals, chlorine and other impurities in it.  These will cause your pen to smell and/or get moldy.

Mix all ingredients together. Gently pull the tips out of the blender pen (both ends).  You can easily pull the tips out with your fingers (or tweezers).  Be careful not to ruin the tips. *Put the caps back on both ends of the marker so you don’t dry out the barrel inside. Soak the tips in the fluid for a few hours (or overnight if they are very dry).  Gently push the tips back into the marker. I store my refill solution in a recycled embellishment case.

To watercolor you simply pick up ink from the lid of your ink pad and color the image. You can also color the image with watercolor pencils or markers then blend with the pen.

I decided to make my card today a little different than yesterday. I layered the image on Blushing Bride then adhered it to a Sahara Sand card base.  I also added a bow using Very Vanilla Satin Ribbon from the Occasions Catalog (item # 142794).

I stamped and colored the front of my envelope this time instead of the flap.

Big On Birthdays

March is “Big on Birthdays” for my family, friends, and me!  (Read on to find out about my special “goodie bag” this month.) This stamp set will come in handy as I make quick & easy cards to send.  I love the big fonts in this stamp set and like that I can use my watercolor pencils, blender pen, aqua painter, or markers to add color to the flowers. Which one do you think I used on this card?

I have been using my watercolor pencils a lot lately so I decided to give them a break and use ink and my blender pen for this card.  I wanted a soft tone so I went with Sahara Sand, Blushing Bride, and Pear Pizzazz. I stamped the sentiment and flowers from Big on Birthdays Stamp Set with Sahara Sand ink on a piece of 4 x 5 1/4 Very Vanilla. This is a photopolymer stamp set which makes it easy see where you are placing it on your card.

It’s so easy to watercolor with ink and a blender pen.  Simply squeeze your ink pad while it is shut to get some ink on the lid to work with or just put a few drops from the ink refill in the lid.  (You don’t want to pick up ink directly from your pad.) Here’s a photo of what my ink pads look like when open.

After coloring the flowers I added  some Pearl Basic Jewels. I adhered my stamped layer on a Very Vanilla card base using Foam Adhesive Strips.  These strips are intended to use for shaker cards but I like the extra thickness and depth you get by wrapping along all four sides.  Here’s a close up.

I always love to make the envelopes coordinate. This one is just sweet and simple.

I made this card for my friend, Erin.  We have a “Birthday Club” (aka Girls Night Out) and each month we pick a different restaurant to go to dinner and celebrate the Birthday Girl. Here’s a photo from our celebration for Erin (wearing the hat).

img_9670-1

This month I will get to choose the restaurant for my birthday. I usually choose a place that has delicious Maryland crab cakes! I think it will be fun to celebrate with you too this month! So, I am putting together some “party favors” to share with you. Everyone who shops with me this month will automatically receive a goodie bag. My party favor goodie bags will include assorted retired products (Designer Series Paper and embellishments as well as some surprises). I will also have some blog candy prizes this month so be sure to check back.

Remember, when you shop during the Sale-A-Bration promotion and your order totals $50 (before shipping/tax), you can choose a FREE  Sale-A-Bration product!  This is the final month for Sale-A-Bration.  Shop Here

A Sneak Peek at the New Watercolor Pencils

Every year I say I’m going to get my Christmas cards done early and I always seem to end up racing around at the last minute to pull it together.  How about you…are you prepared in advance or last minute like me?

We always send a photo card and I like to combine my love of photography and stamping. In the past I have made an easel card I shared HERE and used Paper Pumpkin refill kits (see below for photo). This year my daughter put together this photo collage.  My husband likes to add a personal message on some of his so this is what I came up with at the last minute.

Add a personal touch to a photo card with Stampin’ Up! products
img_7824
Open the flap for more photos and space for a personal message.

The photo card measures 4 x 8 so I cut my cardstock 4 1/8 x 10 5/8 and scored it at 8 1/8. I added a layer of black cardstock on the front flap to tie in the colors from the card. I used the oval from the Stitched Shapes Framelits with the Holly Berry Stamp Set and new watercolor pencils (available January 4th in the new occasions catalog) to embellish the front flap on my card. I am in love with these watercolor pencils!!!  You will want to put them on your MUST HAVE list!!! They make it so quick and easy to create a work or art.  I simply colored with the old olive pencil then brushed over it with my blender pen. Check out these before and after pictures.

Here’s a video from Stampin’ Up! highlighting how to create with these new watercolor pencils using different paper with the aqua painter or blender pen.

I used classic ink (rather than the archival) with the blender pen and had no problem with the ink bleeding. You can use cardstock with the blender pen but you need to use watercolor paper or shimmer paper when you use the aqua painter. I added some red pearls leftover from a past paper pumpkin kit for berries.  You can make your own using a red sharpie marker to color Pearl Basic Jewels or Rhinestones.  I used red ribbon to make a bow and attached it with a mini glue dot. I popped up the stitched layer with Stampin’ Dimensionals and stamped my envelope to match.
