I have a dear friend, Laura, who has some chickens. She turned her dog house into their coup and it is so funny how every night at dusk they go up the plank and to go to bed for the night. When I saw the Hey, Chick Stamp Set in the Sale-A-Bration catalog I knew I would use it to make her birthday card. My inspiration for the technique on my card came from a chicken pin cushion a member of my downline made. You know how I love to make my cards coordinate so…paper piecing to the rescue! Here’s my card.

I found some paper that looked like fabric from the Warmth & Cheer Designer Series Paper Stack (retired from the Holiday catalog) to do the paper piecing technique. This technique is really not hard to do. You simply stamp your image twice…once on cardstock and once on the DSP. I used Archival Black Ink to stamp my images. I used the Stamp-a-ma-jig to position my chicken on top.
I wanted to add some dimension to my chickens so I used some Cherry Cobbler and Delightful Dijon ink and a blender pen to highlight and color on top of the DSP. I saw another demonstrator, Kathryn Ruddick, do this. It really makes it pop from the background.
Then I used my paper snips to cut out the chicken. You don’t have to worry about fussy cutting around the legs or beak as they are already stamped on the cardstock. Adhere on top of the cardstock image.
I used the Aqua Painter with a little Crumb Cake ink to wash along the bottom. I stamped my sentiment on Cherry Cobbler card stock with black ink. I cut the tips off a toothpick for the sign and attached with glue dots and dimensionals. I decided I needed to stamp and cut out another wing to make it appear like the chicken was holding the sign.
I really like this technique. It was fun to do and I am happy with how it turned out. I know you appreciate all the details so here’s the dimensions for this card..
Card base :Cherry Cobbler 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 scored at 4 1/4.
Layer 1: Whisper White 3 x 5
Layer 2: Cherry Cobbler 2 7/8 x 4 3/8
Stamped Layer: 2 3/4 x 4 1/4
The sentiment is cut out using the Bunch of Banners Framelits.

I love piecing but rarely do it. Sometimes you just have to wing it and try it! Speaking of wings, I love the added wing to make her look like she is holding the sign. This was such a fun touch and then doing some ink and blender pens on top for depth really made it squawk! Henrietta looks like she has a little chocker necklace on the way the plaid made that extra “thread” at the neck. I can just picture your friend’s chickens going up the plank to roost. Do they lay eggs? That would have to be a big dog house so she could gather the eggs. Speaking of dog houses, some people have a little black goat and it stays in the dog house and has a dog bed it drug out in yard to lay in the sun with. I passed by that house hundred’s of times and just thought it was a Heinz 57 variety of dog and then after everyone asked if I had seen the goat it clicked it was not a dog! That patch of grass in the yard doesn’t grow very tall as it eats the grass. That is a bit too far for Ted to walk but I wonder if the goat would come to the fence to great him. That way I could see if it was a male or female. Anyway, it was fun to see the girls again, I wonder how Henrietta manages to get on top of the other, I guess she has a leg up on it or a jump on it?
Chris, you always make me laugh! Yes, my friends chickens do lay eggs. When she comes to visit me she brings me some. I; however, do not like eggs! I can’t even stand the smell of them and my husband loves them and fixes a big egg breakfast every weekend! I try to sleep through his breakfast! The only eggs I eat are Cadbury or in a chocolate cake! LOL

This was my first time inking it up! I don’t think my photography did these chicks justice! They really are cute! I want to make my friend some note cards with this set too. She loves to write and prefers snail mail over email. If only I could get her into stamping!!!

Such a great post. The “teacher” in you always shows, in the BEST way. The card is fabulous; the paper piecing and the extra shading are superb. That said, I am probably the only SU consumer on the planet who did NOT rush to get this stamp set. I love all the clever designs I see out there, and I’d love to RECEIVE a card with Phyllis and her friends, but it’s not my style to create. I’ll leave that up to you, oh artistic maven! TFS
