Big On Birthdays

March is “Big on Birthdays” for my family, friends, and me!  (Read on to find out about my special “goodie bag” this month.) This stamp set will come in handy as I make quick & easy cards to send.  I love the big fonts in this stamp set and like that I can use my watercolor pencils, blender pen, aqua painter, or markers to add color to the flowers. Which one do you think I used on this card?

I have been using my watercolor pencils a lot lately so I decided to give them a break and use ink and my blender pen for this card.  I wanted a soft tone so I went with Sahara Sand, Blushing Bride, and Pear Pizzazz. I stamped the sentiment and flowers from Big on Birthdays Stamp Set with Sahara Sand ink on a piece of 4 x 5 1/4 Very Vanilla. This is a photopolymer stamp set which makes it easy see where you are placing it on your card.

It’s so easy to watercolor with ink and a blender pen.  Simply squeeze your ink pad while it is shut to get some ink on the lid to work with or just put a few drops from the ink refill in the lid.  (You don’t want to pick up ink directly from your pad.) Here’s a photo of what my ink pads look like when open.

After coloring the flowers I added  some Pearl Basic Jewels. I adhered my stamped layer on a Very Vanilla card base using Foam Adhesive Strips.  These strips are intended to use for shaker cards but I like the extra thickness and depth you get by wrapping along all four sides.  Here’s a close up.

I always love to make the envelopes coordinate. This one is just sweet and simple.

I made this card for my friend, Erin.  We have a “Birthday Club” (aka Girls Night Out) and each month we pick a different restaurant to go to dinner and celebrate the Birthday Girl. Here’s a photo from our celebration for Erin (wearing the hat).

This month I will get to choose the restaurant for my birthday. I usually choose a place that has delicious Maryland crab cakes! I think it will be fun to celebrate with you too this month! So, I am putting together some “party favors” to share with you. Everyone who shops with me this month will automatically receive a goodie bag. My party favor goodie bags will include assorted retired products (Designer Series Paper and embellishments as well as some surprises). I will also have some blog candy prizes this month so be sure to check back.

    1. Thanks Nancy! I love how we can color on Very Vanilla or Whisper White with a blender pen. I much prefer cardstock or shimmery white over watercolor paper…it doesn’t match with white or vanilla.

I have to share a “Hump Day’ story from a few years ago…I had this adorable student and one day during Circle Time I asked, “What day is it today?” and she called out (even better than the commercial), “Hump Day”. So from that point on we would always call Wednesday “Hump Day”. The next year the kindergarten teacher told me my students didn’t know the days of the week. Ooops!!! I don’t know why she wouldn’t accept Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Humpday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday! LOL

  1. I love love your envelope ! This is a pretty set and it is great if you have a lot of birthday cards to make! I have to go now to see if I can find your address so I can send you a BD card !!
    Happy March 1st !!

    1. There are so many reasons why I love stamping and being able to make matching envelopes is one of them!!
FYI…swap cards were mailed out yesterday. Watch for your happy mail!

  2. So lovely and I never seem to use that word! That envelope sends it over the top! I think I might just have to take advantage of a goodie bag as a pre-birthday treat for myself. I wish I was there to be a part of the celebration of birthdays sounds like a good time is had by all.

Couple of questions: 1. When IS YOUR birthday? 2. Blender pens. Mine seem to be dry – are they suppose to be? I normally use my aqua painters pens so I had never used the other until the other day I thought I would give it a try but it was so dry it made a rough sounding noise. Do you add moisture or lots of ink to blender part?

Since you look forward to my play on words – how about your card and envelope are fancy smancy – truly a work of art from the heart!

  3. Oh Chris, you do make my day! Fancy Smancy! Too funny especially in seeing I was working with silly rhymes with my kids today…they would have liked Fancy Smancy! You have given me an idea for tomorrow’s post. I am going to address your questions instead of what I had originally planned! 🙂 My birthday is the 24th and I am getting the best present ever this year…my daughter’s spring break starts on the 17th and she is flying home! YEA!!!! This has been the longest stretch without seeing her and I can’t wait!! I wish I was off too but I can’t complain about my 1/2 days!!! I seem to recall you have a March birthday too ???? When is yours?

    1. St. Patrick’s Day which is March 17th when your daughter’s spring break starts! That will be so fun for you to have her home.

At least the kids didn’t say Tuesday is Tip Day (isn’t that what Susan calls it?) and Sunday as Step it up day!

My husband taught 9th graders and some of them didn’t know the days of the week, I swear!

Looking forward to seeing the swap cards and receiving one too!

  4. Jeanie~I love your set of card and envelope. I got this stamp set for the sentiments and haven’t been overly enticed by the flowers. but using it the way you have makes me rethink my aversion to this particular floral layout. Enabler!! I’ll be CASE-ing this design. Thanks for the inspiration.
Glad you’re up and about. Your students must really be so happy to have you back.

  5. I’m a day late again–busy day catching up from long visit with granddaughter so worth it to me, but i had to say how much i love this card. I’ve seen this stamp set used and always thought so-so–and i don’t like that you’re still pretty stamp in it! I might have to re-think it though! Love the Hump Day story.
(Did i get a swap card too? I never heard if you received mine and i worry about the mail sometimes!)
