Retired But Loved

You know how I love to make cards to coordinate with a gift.  Well, if I can, I also like to make my thank you notes reflect the gift I received. I had to pull a couple of retired stamp sets off the shelf for today’s cards.

I received this gorgeous orchid from the office staff at school.  This beauty has a place of honor on the table in my foyer so everyone who comes through my front door is guaranteed to see it!  I don’t have a green thumb so the pressure is on to keep it alive!

I wanted to use the Happy Watercolor Stamp Set (retired)  for the orchid and Sweet Sugarplum for my card base.

I stamped the orchid on a piece of 2 1/4 x 4 1/2 Shimmery White. This is my go to paper for watercolor projects. I colored the flower with the Watercolor Pencils and a blender pen. It is so quick and easy to do!! I love the new Glimmer Paper that I got for FREE during Sale-A-Bration.  I cut a 2 3/8 x 4 5/8 piece of Sweet Sugarplum to mat the stamped image. I made a bow from some Sweet Sugarplum Glitter Ribbon (retired from the Holiday catalog) which matched perfectly with the Glimmer Paper. I cut a Delicate White Doily in half and adhered it behind the layered piece. The sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms Stamp Set is stamped in Sweet Sugarplum ink.  I made one for each of the them and colored the envelopes to match.

My friend Caroline brought me a basket with dinner and flowers. She is such a great cook! I wasn’t feeling my best that day and her thoughtfulness really cheered me up!

Caroline often buys cards from me and she really likes the watercolor ones so I knew I wanted to watercolor her thank you note.

This card is a remake of one I made several years ago that I found on Pinterest.   I used the Love is Kindness Stamp Set (retired) because it had some beautiful tulips just like the flowers. I stamped the image on Shimmery White cardstock with Momento Black ink and colored it with the Watercolor Pencils and Blender Pen.  I cut it out with an Oval Framelit and adhered it to the Delicate White Doily. The sentiment is from Bunch of Blossoms Stamp Set.  I used Basic Black Bakers Twine to make a bow and attached it with a glue dot. My card base is Smoky Slate with another layer of Smoky Slate that measures 4 x 5 1/4. I adhered both the layered panel and the stamped layer with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  The inside sentiment is from the Thankful Thoughts Stamp Set. I love to stamp the inside of my card as well as my envelope to match.

I still have several more thank you cards to make! I hope you will check back tomorrow to see what I made to go with the Edible Arrangement I received. I photographed all the Swap Cards today and hope to swap and send them out this week.  I’ll wait to make sure everyone receives their card before I showcase the cards on my blog.  You are in for a real treat!

Have a wonderful day!

    1. Thank you so much Deb! You are so sweet! I missed stamping!!! I truly love to create and convince myself I am saving so much $ by making my own cards to send!! LOL Homemade from the heart is priceless!

  2. Beautiful cards Jeanie, and your flowers (real and on paper) are gorgeous! I love these stamps sets as well…definitely keepers. Have a fun day.

    1. Thanks Mary Ann! I love fresh flowers and these brought a smile to my face! I also seem to love flower stamps based on the many sets I own. LOL

  3. Oh my gosh Jeanie, these are just beautiful!!! The watercoloring is perfect! Love the Shimmery White, I forget about it. And I love that the glimmer paper matches the ribbon! I have a lot of that ribbon! I agree with Deb H, you were greatly missed!!!

    1. Awww..thank you! I was excited to see that the ribbon matched so well. I love how Stampin’ Up! ribbon matches with the paper and ink. I wish we had ribbon in more colors!!! Fingers crossed for the new catalog! Looking forward to the debut in April!

  4. I love seeing these great stamps in use. I never like to retire anything! These cards are beautiful and I miss seeing these stamps. TFS?

    1. I seem to have a hard time letting go of retired stamps! I buy what I love so why would I want to get rid of it? I don’t showcase a lot of retired stamps because I don’t want people to be disappointed that they are no longer available.

  5. I love your thank you cards. Some stamps are ageless and perfect for the occasion. What great gifts from your co-workers.I’m pulling for the orchid to live under your watchful eye. LOL. I hope you are feeling better and have a wonderful day.

    1. I agree that some stamps are ageless! I always buy what I love and look for versatility and both of these met those requirements! Fingers crossed that I don’t kill the orchid!! It’s in a perfect location to remind me to feed it!

  6. Jeanie, I love all your ‘Thank you’ Cards! So beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent. Also glad to hear you are doing better!

    1. Thank you Cheryl! I love the challenge to take the gift as inspiration to make a card to match. One of these days I’d like to try some of those color and/or sketch challenges.

  7. Oh my how pretty are these cards ! You did a beautiful job creating the match up cards for your friends that gave you those beautiful flowers . Orchids and Tulips are so special ! Lucky you !
So glad you are better !

      1. No I have not tried the pin in the tulip trick. I would the next time I get some tulips . . . (Prop around Mother’s Day.) 🙂

    1. WOW! I had never heard of this! Definitely worth a try. I love fresh flowers. I received another gorgeous arrangement that stayed upright in this huge glass vase for well over a week. When it finally died I noticed the flowers had tape wrapped around them near the base to keep them in place. I wish I had noticed that to see how they did it before I pulled it apart to throw the flowers away. I’ll have to post a picture of that one! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful tips!

  8. It looks like you are feeling better or at least enough to do some gorgeous thank yous! I am pretty sure I have this stamp as I live in Tulip town. With this crazy weather we aren’t sure how the tulips will do this year. They plant thousands of them every year for the Tulip Festival. We only have a few tulips in our yard as Mike prefers roses and all the other stuff he has. But, my metal tulips are still out from last year and I have plenty of silk ones too. Your water coloring is beautiful. I was pretty excited last night when I found my black Memento pad. It was in with some other stuff so now it is with the Staz On and the Archival black pads. I am going to have to give this a try. Just simply gorgeous….

  9. Our library was given a couple of the same type of orchids two years ago and they are STILL alive. We were told to water them by placing ice, yes ice, on top of the bark they live in. Apparently the water slowly trickles to the roots mimicking how they receive moisture when living on a forest floor under a canopy of trees and larger plant life. Who knew?! Just once a week seems to do the trick!

Love your blog. You are such a talent. So many of your card ideas have become my “go-to” cards.
Thanks so much for everything and hope you are on the mend!
