Give a gift from the heart…a quick & simple handmade scented jar candle

The fresh scent of pine cones add to the Christmas feel during the holidays.  Not only do they smell good, they make pretty decorations and gifts too! I love to give handmade gifts and this DIY Scented Mason Jar Candle has some added “sparkle and shine”.   It’s also really quick and easy to make, inexpensive, and doesn’t use any hazardous chemicals! Simply fill a mason jar with some potpourri (or you could use fresh greens, pine cones, cranberries, and/or fruit slices) , pour in some extra light olive oil, and add a floating wick on top.  How easy is that?!  I purchased a pack of 50 floating wicks from Amazon for $6.00. If you have Amazon prime you can get these delivered fast and have plenty of time to put together beautiful gifts to give this holiday season. (You can make these with different seasonal potpourri for your decor or gifts throughout the year!)

I added some metallic ribbon from the upcoming Sale-A-Bration catalog to wrap around the jar and add some sparkle.  This gorgeous ribbon is woven with shiny gold or silver accents.  You can get 2 rolls FREE with a $50 purchase (starting Jan. 4th).  One roll is white with silver accents and the other is very vanilla with shiny gold accents.

I used glue dots to attach the pine boughs and berries cut from the Pretty Pines Thinlits Dies.  I also added some mini pinecones to go with the ones real ones that I put inside the jar. (These adorable mini pinecones are retiring so stock up now before they sell out!)

I made a matching 3 x 3 Very Vanilla gift card to go with the jar.  My card is a miniature version of one inspired by Mary Fish.  I heat embossed the sentiment from Christmas Pines with gold embossing powder and then added even more “sparkle” with the clear Wink of Stella Glitter Brush on top of the word “sparkle”. The DSP from Warmth & Cheer coordinates beautifully with this gift.

This makes a nice gift for hostesses, teachers, hairdressers, friends, etc.  They are easy to transport with the lid on top. (Just use washi tape to attach the floating wick to the top of the jar so it doesn’t get lost in the oil while traveling.) One of the good things about these is they keep well and long. As the oil burns you simply refill with more olive oil.  You can add essential oils for whatever scent you prefer.

I hope you liked today’s project.  Subscribe to my blog for more card and gift giving inspiration.

      1. Yes Jeanie, for some reason my notifications were blocked! All is good and back to normal. I was missing five blog notifications in the end. Thanks for asking.
        🙂

  1. Ok……MY FRIEND – I can just see one of these beauties keeping me clam in my work area (hint – hint)….again, FABULOUS post!

  2. You knocked it out of the park! What a wonderful idea. Can you tell me how much olive oil you used? I know it depends on the size of the jar, but how much of the jar is filled with olive oil? Thank you so much.

    1. Hi Kathy! Thank you for your kind words! I had no idea how much oil as I always just pour and fill so I decided to experiment… It seems the large jar (which I showed here) takes almost 3 1/2 cups to fill. More than I thought. I buy a huge bottle of Olive Oil from Sams Club so it’s much cheaper. I have made many with the smaller jars and they are adorable and will probably take about half as much to fill. I have made some with big pine cones and the oil just goes in between so you use almost as much oil as if that was all there was in there. Hope this helps! I have to say they are much prettier in person as I have a hard time photographing glass and liquid. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. 🙂

    1. Thank you Karen! Can’t wait for Ariane to get home…she’s flying in on Saturday! Trying to get all my projects done ahead of time. I need more time in the day to play!! Wishing you a beautiful Christmas too! Congrats to your son!!!! Way to go!

  3. Oh my goodness Jeanie! You hit this out of the park! I want to make your candle and your card. I had no idea you could make a candle like that. I so wish I had bought the pine set.

    1. Thank you Beth! Put that pine set on your next order…it’s on the carry over list! 🙂 FYI…it still looks cute with just ribbon around the rim and/or dangle some sequin or pompom trim. I am sure you can work your magic and make it special!

  4. Jeanie, you are SO CREATIVE! Love these projects. My middle school GS do gifts for community shut-ins every Christmas and I will certainly be CASE-ing this for next year. Thanks for the inspiration all year long. Happiest of holidays to you and your family
